How old is the Universe?

The universe is everything we can see and a lot that we cannot see. It was created in the Big Bang explosion and has been changing and expanding ever since.

If you have ever though how old is the universe, you have some surprise waiting for you! The universe is about 13.7 billion years old. At its beginning it looked nothing like it does today, yet, everything in today’s universe did exist in some form back then. It all started with the Big Bang, a kind of explosion that would not only go on to produce all the matter in the universe but also marked the start of time. The top ten chemical elements that make up the sun are hydrogen, helium, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, silicon, magnesium, neon, iron and sulpur. While hydrogen accounts for the most part of the sun, approximately 71%, sulphur counts the least, around 0.04%!

Wondering about the creation of the universe? At the start, the universe was a hot and dense ball of radiation energy. In one-thousandth of a second, tiny radiation particles produced tiny particles of matter. These combined to form the first ever chemical elements, hydrogen and helium.

Some regions of the young universe contained slightly more hydrogen and helium than others. These shrank to from the first STARS!

Nuclear reactions inside the stars produced many other chemical elements, including carbon and oxygen. The elements in the universe today were produced from elements created in the Big Bang! Therefore, we are all benefiting and admiring from these elements at the present!

Robots – The Machine Man

If we define a robot as a machine that works like a human being, then the first robots were automata that are remarkable moving dolls that could copy human actions, and sometimes with amazing facility. For example, one could write a whole sentence using a pen and ink.

Automata were made in the 1700s. They worked by clockwork and contained very complex systems of gears. They were made purely to astound and entertain people and could not do physical tasks like modern robots. These developed as machines become more and more automatic. However, only with the development of computers over the last 40 years have robots been able to perform complex tasks.

The Czech playwright, Karel Capek, in a play called R.U.R, which stood for Rossum’s Universal Robots, first coined the word robot. In the play, people have mechanical servants that look like the people and do manual work for them. Capek called these machines are robots from the Czech word robota, which means labor.

With robots getting into the technology, many inventions have happened in the extra terrestrial side as well. Many of the satellites are now in the space that carries telescopes and other instruments used in astronomy. They look at the stars and other heavenly bodies, sending pictures and information about them back to Earth by television and radio.

Astronomers like to use make use of satellites in this way because the atmosphere of the earth blocks out some of the rays that come from the stars and other bodies and also makes the images of stars seen in big telescopes rather indistinct.

Fibre Optics – Heart of Communication

After Pythagoras, lot of inventions came into existence and the Morse code is certainly a commendable invention that came into existence. Fibre optics is one of the latest method of communications and the light signals are flashed by lasers along cables containing thin glass threads in this technology. The system gives communications of an extremely high quality and in great quantity. Yet it is the same as the communications system developed by the American inventor Samuel Morse in the 1830’s!

Morse invented the code in which letters, numbers and punctuation are changed into short and long signals called dots and dashes. The code was used for sending messages, either as electric signals along telegraphic wires, or as light signals produced by flashing lamps. In addition, a code is used in which the light signals are sequences of on-off flashes, rather like Morse code. The signals are incredibly fast, up to 2000 million on-off flashes in a second!

Everything worked by numbers

One of the earliest great scientists, Pythagoras, lived in ancient Greece in the 500s BC. He was convinced that numbers governs the entire universe.

This theory is illustrated by a famous discovery made by Pythagoras. He found that pipes or strings whose lengths are in simple numerical proportion such as 3:2 or 4:3 give the musical notes that are in harmony. This gave rise to the belief that simple mathematical relationships underlie everything and can explain everything. This idea is fundamental to science, even though the mathematics involved may often be complex.

The Man behind Computers

The idea of a computer was first occurred to the British inventor Charles Babbage in about 1833. Others had made calculating machines before him. Nevertheless, Babbage was the first person to conceive of a machine that could be programmed to carry out different calculating operations, as a computer can.

Babbage designed a machine called the Analytical Engine that had the basic features of a modern computer. It was to be a mechanical computer, containing complex systems of shafts and gear wheels. However, only parts of the analytical engine were ever built. The engineering required to complete it was far beyond the techniques of that age and Babbage died in 1871 without knowing his computer would work or not.

In fact, Babbage was far ahead of his time, the first computer, a British wartime decoder called Colossus, was not built until 1943. Like modern computers, it used electronics, as mechanical operations were too slow. Colossus and all other computers since are really the descendants of Babbage’s analytical engine.

Nowadays, computers have turned out to be the heart of functioning of almost all applications. Without a computer, the humans of the present time cant survive for any longer, I wish to confess! Thanks to Charles Babbage, that the initiative to invent a computer came into existence while Babbage was cursed by the others of his period for getting into such a sophisticated, life-saving technology. Inventions are often not to forget, accidents however, the accidents save the human kind in the future, not to forget!

Weight Measurement

Are you aware of the correct measurement unit for weight? At the same time as weight is measured in kilograms, it is usually correct to use Newtons. One Newton is the weight of a mass of 102 grams that is exactly 3.6 ounces, counting to the weight of an apple!!!!!!!

Units of Measurement…….

While kilograms and Newtons are some of the commonly used units for measurement of weight, there are in fact many other units in existence. There are only seven basic scientific units to be precise and these measure mass, time, electric current, temperature, light and the amount of substance. All other units are combinations of the some of these basic units. With these combinations, we can then derive the units for other properties with no hassle.

The Sun God with all his power………………………………

The sun sends us heat and light rays that keep us alive. However, we get extra energy by burning coal, oil, and other fuels to drive power stations, and from falling water in hydroelectric power stations. Nevertheless, most of this extra energy also comes from the sun. Fuels such as coal, oil and wood are made from living things, coil and oil being the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. All living things depend on the sun, so these fuels are really stores of the sun’s energy.

The water in a dam or river feeding a hydroelectric station fails as rain on hills above. It gets there by rising through the air as water vapor from the land or sea below. To do this, the water needs warmth and this heat comes from as anyone can probably make a guess, the sun. Therefore, the water also stores the sun’s energy.

One important source of energy does not originate from the sun. Can you make a wild guess? Well, strictly speaking, it is the nuclear energy, which is produced from nuclear fuels present in the crust of the earth. As long as the sun remains, we are assured of getting these non-depleting resources on a continuous basis. However, with mounting population across the globe, people fear losing the storage of these resources due to increased consumption and in the due course, there is always a probability that these resources may get depleted even in the presence of sun. The earth is slowly but steadily losing its resources owing to the drastic increase in consumption across the globe.

Invention that improved the lives of millions of people

Are you aware of the invention that improved the living standards of millions of people across the globe? One invention that almost all of us will need eventually is a pair of spectacles or contact lenses. With them, failing eyesight is corrected, so that the wearer can see to read again or make out distant objects.

Before spectacles became common, millions of people across the globe were condemned to misery owing to their inability to see through the objects properly. Glasses with convex lenses that correct long sight came into use only in the 1200s, and short sight was relieved with the invention of concave lenses in the 1400s. These two inventions now, as you can become conscious, improved the lifestyle of the millions of people across the globe.
